- Hello Fellow MacAppers,
-
- Just to add to the discussion (confusion) about where do we go from here with
- MacApp.TECH$:
-
- Some of you may have noticed a test message sent to MacApp.TECH$ from me
- (wiechman@athos.rutgers.edu). That test message had a reason behind it and you
- can see there were some problems with it, five copies appeared in your Link
- box. I was testing something out and did not know how AppleLink would respond.
-
- I have been holding an offline discussion with Carl Nelson about expanding
- AppleLink to be a worldwide conference over the InterNet/USENET. There is
- already a mailing list (macoops@andrew.cmu.edu) out there on USENET which is
- already active, but the members do not use MacApp.
-
- Once and if the bridge between the AppleLink and USENET is made, anything that
- was sent to MacApp.TECH$ would appear on both. Doing so has both plusses and
- minuses that must be considered. Some are listed below but this list is hardly
- complete:
-
-
- Pluses:
- =======
-
- - More people using MacApp.
-
- - Stronger and better Macintosh applications.
-
- - Stronger and better MacApp libraries (ala MacApp Guerillas or whatever we
- decide to call it).
-
- - Access to many of the world's academic computer science community.
-
- - More people using C++ and MacApp.
-
-
- Minuses:
- ========
-
- - More people responding creating a larger number of links.
-
- - More people asking basic questions.
-
- - Potential flame wars about which object-oriented language/library is best.
-
- - Companies making special offers to certified Mac developers would have to be
- more careful about posting to MacApp.TECH$.
-
-
- Other options could include creating MacApp.USENET$ This would be another
- board but I believe it would die of starvation due to separateness. Most
- developers probably would only be on TECH$ and ignore USENET$; while USENET$
- people could not get to TECH$
-
- Begin cheerleaders chanting: "Give me an
-
- 'M'!
- 'A'!
- 'C'!
- 'A'!
- 'P'!
- 'P'!…"
-
- The normal policy for new USENET groups is to take a vote. Similarily, I would
- like to see what the overridding opinion is from Apple people, other MacApp
- developers, etc.
-
- My personal opinion is that we should show the world how great MacApp is. And
- if it isn't latest and greatest thing since sliced bread may be it will become
- the greatest.
-
- Enough of me standing on a soap box. The discussion is open for debate.
